Wild Wednesday: How Can a Tiny Bird Find Its Way?
One day, the summer sky is full of birds.
Then, little by little, it begins to feel quieter.
Some of our smallest birds set off on astonishing journeys, leaving the UK and travelling over land and sea to warmer places far away. Some fly to southern Europe, and some travel all the way to Africa.
How can such a tiny bird know where to go?
No one hands it a map!
And yet, somehow, it knows when the time has come to leave. It may follow the sun, the stars, the shape of the land, the rivers below, or something deep inside itself that whispers, This is the way.
Next time you are outside, look up at the sky and imagine a bird beginning its long journey. Where might it be going? What might it see along the way? And how do you think it finds its path across such a great wide world?
