Wild Wednesday: Why Are There So Many Berries?

When August arrives, the hedgerows begin to change.

Among the dusty leaves and dry grasses, bright berries start to appear — red ones, purple ones, almost-black ones — like tiny lanterns hanging in the sun.

Why now?

Each berry is carrying seeds, and each one may be waiting for a bird, a breeze or a small creature to help its journey begin.

Next time you pass a hedgerow, stop and look closely. You may find more colours, shapes and stages than you expected.
